Cambodia's cassava exports are booming, driving economic growth
According to the Cambodian Cassava Federation, Cambodia has become the fourth largest cassava exporting country in Asia and the tenth largest in the world, with cassava exports contributing approximately 728 million US dollars to the country's economy.
In a meeting with Minister of Industry, Technology and Innovation Han Wandi, Chray Son, Chairman of the Cambodian Cassava Federation, emphasized that the cassava planting area in Cambodia has reached 60000 to 80000 hectares, demonstrating the enormous potential of the industry.
Minister Han Wandi pointed out that relevant departments held early meetings to discuss the challenges faced by the cassava industry and explore opportunities to maximize the economic potential of cassava through local processing and value-added production. Chray Son further explained that currently 95% of cassava is exported in raw material form, with only 5% being processed domestically. This situation indicates that enhancing the value-added processing of cassava is crucial.
Cassava can be used to produce various products, including starch, bread, cookies, potato chips, beverages, and paper, with broad market prospects. Minister Han Wandi emphasized that shifting from exporting raw materials to domestic processing not only helps create higher value products, but also improves the living standards of farmers and promotes diversified industrial development in Cambodia. He pointed out that the federation plays a key role in mobilizing cassava growers, promoting starch rich varieties, and ensuring fair contract agricultural practices.
In addition, Minister Han Wandi encouraged the cassava association to strengthen cooperation with Cambodian enterprises, promote business planning and market access, and actively participate in international expos to enhance the international competitiveness of Cambodian cassava products.
The cassava industry in Cambodia is poised to take off, and looking ahead to the future, it will undoubtedly occupy a more important position in the global market.
