Thailand's cassava is once again vying for the global top spot.
The Thai Ministry of Commerce recently announced that Thailand successfully maintained its position as the world's largest cassava exporter in 2024, and has set the core goal of retaining the global top spot in 2025 to continuously consolidate its leading edge in the international market.
Ms. Arada, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade under the Thai Ministry of Commerce, stated in an interview with the media that in the first five months of 2025 (January to May), Thailand's cassava exports reached 4.06 million tons, a significant year-on-year increase of 37.16%, showing a sound development momentum.
According to the plan, Thailand's annual cassava export target for 2025 is 7.5 million tons. If this target is successfully achieved, Thailand will rank first in global exports for the second consecutive year.
Arada pointed out that this achievement not only reflects the global competitiveness of Thailand's cassava industry, but also demonstrates the high recognition and trust of the international market in Thai products.
To achieve the above goals, the Thai government is actively assisting enterprises in understanding the dynamics of emerging markets and encouraging exporters to expand into diversified markets.
Although China remains the largest export destination, import demand from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and Middle Eastern countries is gradually increasing.
Arada called on export enterprises to strengthen the layout of product diversification, especially to seek new growth points in high-value-added fields such as animal feed.
She noted that expanding into emerging markets and extending the cassava industry chain will be key strategies to stabilize export volumes and enhance international pricing power.
Driven by the continuous growth of global demand, despite a decline of about 30% in international cassava prices since the beginning of this year, Thailand's domestic cassava prices have bucked the trend, rising to 2 baht per kilogram, doubling from the price at the beginning of the year, which has significantly increased farmers' income.
To further tap export potential, Thailand held the 7th World Tapioca Conference 2025 at Siam Paragon in Bangkok from July 29 to 30.
The conference attracted global buyers and industry experts, and it is expected that orders worth no less than 300 million baht will be secured, injecting new impetus into cassava exports.
The Thai government stated that with the deepening of export strategies and the enhancement of international influence, Thailand will play a more important role in the global cassava supply chain and continue to strive to promote agricultural product value addition and sustainable agricultural development.
