近年来由于没有成熟的水污染处理技术，清水河固原市区到沈家河水库段、葫芦河西吉县城到夏寨水库段、隆德县渝河部分河段等马铃薯淀粉加工企业集中的区域废水污染严重，引起了社会各界高度关注。
为此，固原市加大力度治理废水污染。对5000吨以下的马铃薯淀粉加工项目和城镇中心区域、水源保护地、风景旅游区和生态保护区建设的马铃薯淀粉加工企业一律不予审批。目前，固原市年产5000吨以上的淀粉企业共修建废水循环利用沉淀池210多个，总容积8700多立方米。
通过有效治理，目前，清水河、葫芦河、愈河、茹河和泾河水质明显好转，特别是沈家河水库，主要污染物COD为52mg/L,与上年同比下降85.4%，达到水体功能要求。
