日本专门对水产业进行调查研究的组织——东京水产振兴会９日对媒体说，他们正设想利用海藻大量生产生物乙醇，这种燃料因其有助于缓解全球变暖而备受瞩目。
据日本《每日新闻》１０日报道，东京水产振兴会介绍说，与目前利用田间作物生产生物乙醇相比，利用海藻生产生物乙醇可以避免出现粮食作物和燃料作物“争夺”生产资料。
据该组织估算，利用日本现有条件，每年可以养殖１．５亿吨海藻，生产出４００万吨生物乙醇，其原料价格要比田间作物便宜，而且没有多少要新开发的技术。
东京水产振兴会的具体设想，是争取政府的支持，组织渔业从业者和私人企业，利用海上浮网养殖各种海藻，在海上建设工厂就近生产生物乙醇。该组织希望到２０１３年左右进入实际运作。
