从南美洲、非洲、东南亚引进的５０多个木薯新品种，经我国科学家培育筛选，有不少新品种在上海已经获得成功，这将有利于我国扩大木薯种植面积，提高生物质能源作物的产量。
主持这项研究的研究员张鹏告诉记者，引进的木薯新品种淀粉含量高，抗逆境能力强，产量高。如果适宜生长在南方的木薯能够向北推移，特别是能够在荒漠土地上大量繁殖，就可以满足我国利用木薯作为能源作物进行加工的需求。
